$8.4 m boost for Goulburn Broken rivers and irrigators
More than $8.4 million of State Government funding will be used to improve river health and irrigation practices in the Goulburn Broken CMA region.
Projects to be funded include:
" Three sustainable irrigation projects and seven river health projects
" Reducing salt, sediment, and nutrient loadings to the iconic River Murray
" Control of weeds on waterways, enhancement of frontages and stream bed stabilisation within the upper Goulburn Catchment and Broken River basin to protect health of streams.
" Introduction of farm water re-use systems, improving farm drainage and irrigation systems and practices in the Shepparton irrigation regions to reduce salt and nutrient levels
" Protect health of streams within lower Goulburn River and River Murray floodplains
" A range of strategies to protect and enhance health of the Goulburn River catchment
" River monitoring and research activities including indigenous community engagement, protection of threatened species and implementation of threatened species recovery plans
The funding is part of $37 million for Catchment Management Authority regions across the state to improve river health and encourage sustainable irrigation practices as outlined in the
Victorian Governments Our Water Our Future water plan.
